Staycation Ideas and More

Is your family traveling this week for spring break or are you enjoying a staycation? Here are some kid-friendly, low-cost ideas to spend some quality family time together.

Patience, delayed gratification and limitations are three common principles as parents we try to teach our children from birth and beyond. I have found it most ironic that these same principles tend to be the ones we ourselves tend to struggle with the most.

How often have we been stuck in the slow line at the grocery store, or been stopped at a red light because the car in front of us is obviously distracted. I can pretty much guarantee that our reaction was less than ideal.

What about when we, as parents, want something? Do we always wait until the timing is right? Or do we tend to act out of impulse?

Maybe, the family vacation is set for this summer and requires a good deal of patience; or because of finances the family is continuing to save which cause a slight delay on the family trip. Whatever the case maybe, this is one instance where there are at least options.

For those of you at home—like me—here are some kid friendly, low cost ideas to spend some quality family time together. No need to fret about being at home, just make the best of it. Summer will be here soon….promise!

Camp in the living room: set the tent up, pack a cooler, some snacks, a few books, a flashlight, a sleeping bag and board games. Be sure to include the kids in the packing process!

Visit the Detroit Zoo: the animals are always very active during this time of year - they love the cooler weather. We went a couple weeks ago and my two-year-old is still talking about it!

Bring the outdoors in: plant an indoor windowsill herb garden. Gather up the needed supplies an egg carton, some potting soil and some seeds. Voila! You have officially kicked off spring.

Bowling: or .

Visit the Butterflies: this is a win-win because visiting this exhibit at Oakland Mall is fun for the kids and you can support the Children's Miracle Network.

Take out-in: We love ! Why night make the entire night themed? Music, hat, and a picnic dinner!

Remember staycation means no chores! Relax a bit and enjoy your family.
