Sorrento Pizza Continues to Raise Dough for Veterans Support Center in 2013

A portion of all sales from the "General," an extra large pizza, are earmarked for the support of veterans and their families throughout Macomb County. There are is one Sorrento Pizza location in St. Clair Shores.

With a portion of proceeds dedicated to the support of local veterans and their families, there can be no guilt in ordering an extra large Sorrento Pizza in St. Clair Shores this year.

Launching the "Support Our Troops" campaign in 2011 to raise money for the Veterans Support Center, Sorrento Pizza owner Al Marino said his stores will continue their fundraising efforts through 2013.

“It’s something my business can do to help our vets today,” Marino said in a prepared statement. “I see vets coming home now who need help and I know they will get the help they need at the Veterans Support Center. I’m hoping to spread awareness throughout the county about the center and how it can help.”

The sale of large pizzas in specially-designed "Support Our Troops" boxes raised $15,000 for the center in 2011, and in 2012, the local pizza chain introduced an extra large pizza named the "General" to continue its fundraising efforts.

Through 2013, a portion of the sale of each General pizza will be donated to the Veterans Support Center in Roseville. Run by Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 154, the center offers services such as counseling, compensation, employment assistance and disability claims instruction to local veterans from any branch of the military.

The center is completely staffed by volunteers and relies on donations to provide its services to local veterans and their families.

“We see probably 100 people a week and help them all somehow,” said Greg Bowman, longtime volunteer member of the VVA Chapter 154, in a prepared statement. “If they are just getting home and need help to find a job, we have them meet with our Michigan Works representative who comes at least once a week.”

The center also provides peer group sessions for AA and Al-Anon for veterans with substance abuse problems and their food bank provides food to some 100 veterans and their families in need.

Packaged in its special camouflage box, the General is sold at the St. Clair Shores location:
