Christine Profeta opened Professional Tutoring Services after retiring from teaching.

She recently submitted information about the business through the Patch Small Business Spotlight.

Here are her answers.

What does your business offer?

I provide a complimentary first time planning meeting for parents and students. Our next session will provide a baseline evaluation and begin to develop a connection between the student, school environment and myself. I have worked closely with teachers in Grosse Pointe and am familiar with the curriculum. I also have volunteered at Monteith Elementary school in the areas of reading, creative writing, and math. I will provide a differentiated and individualized learning plan for students and welcome teacher input.

What's your most popular product or service?

Reflecting on my students I think my most popular product are the students themselves. Tutoring for my students is not just reading or math but the chance to express feelings about their school experience. They have the opportunity to tell about their frustrations and work together with me to solve the problems whatever they may be. Reflecting on my parents I think my most popular product are the parents themselves. They also have the chance to express their feelings and work on a plan that best serves students, parents, and school.

When was the business founded?

June 2007

How did your business come to be?

I retired from teaching in June 2007. I have taught elementary education with the majority of time in first grade. I hold a Bachelors Degree from Wayne State University in Elementary Education and a Masters Degree in Early Childhood Education from Saginaw Valley University. My passion for assisting students reach their full potential was alive and well. My friend, Dr. William Irving, suggested that I form a tutoring business. It was an easy decision, as well as his support, he provided me with office space, Since 2007 I have worked with students from Assumption Pre-School, Ferry Elementary School, Monteith Elementary School, Harmon Elementary School, Cranbrook, and University Liggett.

Why did you choose the area you did?

This location is excellent due to the proximity of the area that I serve. It is special because, with permission, I have the ability to collaborate with another professional in determining the best individual plan for my students.
