Get in Your Last Licks As Wally's Prepares for Move to St. Clair Shores

The owners of Wally's Frozen Custard will soon be closing the iconic, yellow building in Harper Woods in preparation to move the business to St. Clair Shores.

For more than 60 years, generations of families in St. Clair Shores and the Grosse Pointes have visited the shop for frozen treats.

But come Sunday, it will be the final day to get a twist or Boston cooler at the current location. After the final cone is served, owners Matt and Eliza Ahearn will begin to move their frozen custard machines and other equipment north on Harper to their new location in St. Clair Shores.

"I have been going there since I was a kid," said a sentimental Matt Ahearn, who is looking forward to the new location. "We will have more space to serve everybody."

The Ahearns have owned Wally's for the past nine years, and have outgrown the current 700-square-foot building as they added additional menu items including custard pies.

By moving into their new location, on the corner of Harper and Elizabeth, Wally's will have additional parking and a 2,600-square-foot building to serve customers and prepare catered meals and desserts.

While there will be a bigger building, which includes both a window for walk-up and drive-thru window for customers, the custard recipe will remain the same.

The menu will also be expanded to include coffee, tea, hot chocolate, bagels and other items from they featured at The Galley Cafe, which they formerly operated at the St. Clair Shores Library.

"A lot of people have been looking in and are excited," Ahearn said.

He hopes to have the new location open Oct. 6.
