Farwell Coneys, Hello Bumpy Cake - Changes at the Shores Shopping Center

National Coney Island will close today in the Shores Shopping Center, and in early 2013, a new Sanders retail and clearance store will open in the plaza on Harper at 13 Mile.

The Shores Shopping Center on Harper at 13 Mile in St. Clair Shores will see a number of changes in the coming weeks.

National Coney Island, which was the chain's second restaurant, will close today after 43 years in the same location after the company and landlord could not agree on a new lease.

Clothing retailer Fashion Bug is also in the process of a store closing sale.

While two tenants are leaving, a new retailer recently opened. Play N Trade, a video game store, recently opened.

And coming in Feb. 2013, Sanders will open a new 5,500 square foot retail and clearance store.

This store will also have a full ice cream and chocolate counter.

"As a historic Detroit area company we are proud to be apart of this community," Tiffany Van Hemm, Sanders Candy, director of public relations, wrote in an email.

Rough year for that intersection, Manzella's and the bakery closed; and now a third "institution" drops away. Greedy landlords?

Supposedly... the franchise owners of National Coney Island have considered a new building across the street. Why not be ahead of the game in terms of rent (in a few years) and have a permanent structure with a drive-thru window? Makes sense. Manzella's simply couldn't compete. Nino's and Kroger simply swallowed up their weaker opponent. That shopping center has alot of traffic. That space won't be empty for long.

DOES ANYONE KNOW??? Is National Coney Island constructing a new restaurant in the former Citgo gas station across the street? I see alot of work being done and last week they erected some huge vertical girders into the ground. There is a red worksite permit on the window but I haven't stopped to read it.
