9 Mack Merchants to 'Light Up The Night'

Holiday songs, food and charity events are planned Thursday for the first 9 Mack Merchants "Light Up The Night" event.

Businesses and organizations in the 9 Mile and Mack area have an evening of holiday cheer music, dance, food and charity planned Thursday on Mack between 9 Mile and 9 Mack Drive.

Karen Palazzolo, who owns Caffe Far Bella with her husband Jack, told City Council Monday that the event is intended to "raise awareness of the area" and "bring back the old-world holiday feeling."

The event, sponsored by the 9 Mack Merchants Association, is scheduled from 6 - 9 p.m. Thursday. This year there will be a complimentary shuttle from the South Lake High School parking lot.

According to organizers, Light Up The Night features:

  • Illuminated walkway, with the sale of luminaries to benefit The Lake House
  • Christmas Sing-a-Long
  • Ugly Sweater Contest
  • Letters to Santa
  • Strolling Singers
  • Roasted Chestnuts
  • South Lake High School Marching Band
  • Dance Performances by Casali school of dance and by Mary Ellen School of dance.
Schedule of Events:

6 p.m.: Light Up The Night will begin at with the South Lake High School   Marching Band playing at the corner of 9 mile and Mack Ave. 

6:30 p.m.: Mary Ellen School of dance will perform, followed by Casali School of Dance at 7 p.m. 

7:30 p.m.: The tree lighting ceremony will take place and will include a Christmas sing-a-long with South Lake Middle School Choir.

8 p.m.:  The Parade of Ugly Sweaters will take place and Grosse Pointe
Theater Troupe shall perform scenes from "White Christmas."

  • Free roasted chestnuts by 9 Mack Merchants Association
  • Free kettle corn sponsored by Roy O'Brien Ford
  • Free coffee, and sale hot soups and chili by Cafe Far Bella
  • Hot dogs for sale by T-Bones Restaurant
  • Apple blossom sale by SCS Seniors
  • Cider, donut and ornament Sale by South Lake Band Boosters
  • Corn on the cob for sale by Little Z's BBQ
Charity drop-off
  • Fill-a-Ford canned food drive at Roy O'Brien Ford
  • Toys for Tots toy collection at Caffe Far Bella, Casali School of Dance, T-Bones, New Edge Martial Arts, Circare and Jan & Jim's Hallmark (through Dec. 6)
  • Handbags of Hope collection at Caffe Far Bella and Circare
  • Coats, hats, scarves, gloves and socks for children at the warmnign center and Connie's Children's Shop (through Dec. 5)
Other events include:
  • Letters for Santa
  • "Let It Snow" Exhibition of Student Art Snowflakes
  • Send a soldier a Christmas card
  • Strolling singers
This year there will be a complimentary shuttle from the South Lake High School parking lot.
