An early morning blaze heavily damaged Gilbert's Lodge in St. Clair Shores.

Fire crews received a call at 4:20 a.m. from someone passing by who reported seeing flames coming out of the building.

After responding and arriving on the scene, St. Clair Shores fire officials called a second alarm to assist them in battling the blaze.

Crews from Eastpointe, Roseville, Harrison Township, Warren and Sterling Heights assisted in putting out the fire. Police officers shut down Harper to traffic to allow the fire crews to battle the blaze.

Fire Chief George Morehouse said the fire was under control about 5 a.m., and stated there is extensive damage to the building due to the heat and smoke. The cause of the fire is under investigation, and investigators are focusing on the kitchen area. He added that no fire fighters were injured battling the blaze.

The restaurant and bar, which had an up north decor, has been a popular neighborhood destination for decades and part of the community. In addition to being a destination for diners, sports fans and gatherings, Gilbert's gave back to the community and participated in events including the Lake Shore Taste Fest.

It also gained national attention after it was revealed that rapper Eminem worked there before hitting it big in the music business.
