GP Theatre's Britton Elected President of Michigan Community Theatre

Community Theatre Association of Michigan represents 65 theatre groups across the state of Michigan.

ST. CLAIR SHORES - At their Annual Meeting September 29, Mary Lou Britton of St. Clair Shores was elected president of the Community Theatre Association of Michigan (CTAM), representing nearly 65 local community theatres across the state.

Representing Grosse Pointe Theatre as her home theatre group, Britton has been active in the state association for more than 30 years.

“Community theatre is no longer Mickey and Judy deciding to put on a show in the barn; it’s big business now with show budgets running in the tens of thousands for many productions. We not only help the community’s economic health with the resources we attract, but we also enrich people’s lives with culture and exposure to the performing arts,” she commented.

“We provide a family experience for the audience, as well as family groups having fun together behind the scenes,” Britton continued.

Britton will have the opportunity to travel to theatre groups across Michigan and encourage groups and individuals to take advantage of the many services provided by CTAM: Educational workshops, conferences, annual playwriting contest, accreditation and resource sharing.

As part of American Association of Community Theatre, CTAM also hosts a statewide one-act play festival every other year, called AACTfest. The 2013 AACTfest will be held in Kalamazoo in February.

Founded in 1951, CTAM has been helping community theatres thrive in Michigan for 62 years.
