Assumption GreekFest

Assumption’s popular GreekFest makes its return August 16-19 with four full days of excitement and Greek food and culture. The festival will
kick off on Thursday, August 16 at 11 a.m. and run through Sunday, August 19
until 8 p.m. 

Hours are Thursday 11 - 11 p.m. (Grand Opening Ceremony: 6:30 pm.); Friday 11 - 11 p.m.; Saturday: 11 a.m. - midnight; Sunday: 11 a.m. - 8 p.m.

 “Return of the tried and
true traditions as well as exciting new offerings will make this Festival even
more outstanding than last year’s,” says Assumption GreekFest Cochairperson Tom
Thomas.  “We’ll have all the traditional
Greek food including salad, leg of lamb, spinach pie, chicken kebob, souvlaki
and of course, “flaming cheese” saganaki and much more,” says Thomas.

In addition to the Greek food, Festivalgoers will enjoy an abundance
of delicious Greek pastries, live entertainment, Greek dancing, shopping with
vendors from all over the country, and a taverna.  Performances from the popular Hellenic
Society For the Performing Arts Dancers are among dance groups scheduled.  Dancers of all ages will perform in colorful
costumes representing regions of Greece.  Opening ceremonies will begin on Thursday at
6:30 p.m. with the youth from Grosse Pointe South High School’s Choir singing
the National Anthem in Greek and English. 


GreekFest 2012 includes a “Kids Tent” with plenty of great
rides, activities, games, and petting zoo and pony rides.  Friday, August 17 is “Free Family Day” from
11a.m. – 4 pm, with no admission charge for the entire family (including
parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles!) 
Regular admission is $2 and children under 12 years of age are no
charge.  Free parking and shuttle service
provided.

– 6 p.m during Festival days.  Tours of
Assumption Church will be given daily. Visit the cultural exhibit prepared in
collaboration with the DIA in the Hellenic Room and view the work of internationally
known iconographer Vlasis Tsotsonis.  Assumption Greek Orthodox Church is located at
21800 Marter Rd. in the communities of Grosse Pointe Woods and St. Clair
