9/11 Tribute at Metro Beach

The Huron-Clinton Metroparks will hold special 9/11 tributes at its parks throughout the area, including at Metro Beach.

The public is invited to take part in "Michigan Remembers" and pay respects to all who died 10 years ago, plus offer thanks to those who protect and serve our nation.

An official recognition and thank you ceremony will begin at 8:15 p.m. and conclude with the lighting of floating lanterns at 9:11 p.m., which will be then released over the lake.

Leading up to the 9/11 tribute, park visitors are invited to write personal sentiments on special banners on display at seven Metroparks. (Metro Beach, Wolcott Mill and Stony Creek will display them on Sept. 10 and 11.) These banners will be then given as a thank-you to the first responders and military in attendance.

Visitors can also take part in family activities at the park, beginning at 5 p.m. These include face painting, bounce houses, music by 98.7 AMP Radio and photo booth, 104.3 WOMC’s Super Jackpot Machine, food and more.

For those who would like to light a Sky Lantern at the park, they can be purchased on site that evening for a $5 donation to the Salvation Army, or picked up in advance at any Metro Detroit Chevy Dealer. The lanterns are made of rice paper on a bamboo frame and are biodegradable. When lit, the heat from the flame causes the lantern to rise.

Event organized by CBS Radio Detroit-WWJ 950 Newsradio, 98.7 AMP Radio, 99.5 WYCD, 104.3 WOMC, and the Huron-Clinton Metroparks.

Admission fees will be free for all veterans, active military, police, and firefighters starting at 5 p.m. A vehicle entry permit is required to enter any Huron-Clinton Metropark and is only $25 annually for regular admission, $15 annually for seniors, or $5 daily.
