Summer Concert Series Concludes With Collection for the Troops

Lac Ste Claire Kiwanis Club collects funds, school supplies for local children of military families

The St. Clair Shores series at closed out with country music and a local charity effort to aid military families.

The park was filled with people who came out to see the final show for the year, which featured WDIV Channel 4 anchor Devin Scillian as the lead singer for his band, Arizona Son.

The concerts, hosted by the St. Clair Shores and the St. Clair Shores Activities Committee, got rave reviews from the public.

"The price is free and the quality of the shows are amazing," said Howard Thacker, 38, of Saint Clair Shores.

Many people who attended brought schools supplies to give to the Lac Ste Claire Kiwanis Club, who led a charity drive to donate the goods to Team Selfridge Military Family Assistance.

Richard Swanquist, 52 of St. Clair Shores, said the school supplies and monetary donations collected will go to help military families in need at Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Harrison Township. Swanquist is the president-elect of the Kiwanis group and will be their president next year.

Current Lac Ste Claire Kiwanis President Bryan Mazey, of St. Clair Shores said the group has been doing this since February of 2006 and thanked the city's Parks and Recreation Department and Activities Committee for working with the Kiwanis on the charity drive.
