St. Clair Shores Youth Diversity Council to Host MLK Celebration

The St. Clair Shores Youth Diversity Council and the Michigan Roundtable for Diversity and Inclusion will host a Martin Luther King Day Celebration Monday at South Lake High School.

South Lake High School will host the annual Martin Luther King Day Celebration with the theme "This is OUR Story."

The event will honor the work Dr. Martin Luther King with a local flavor including the viewing of a student-produced video and presentation of a community quilt. The quilt, was the idea of South Lake Principal Carmen Kennedy, who is also the event's keynote speaker.

"I have had the great pleasure of working with (Kennedy) and she has been above and beyond generous with her time assisting the group outside of her duties as a principal," Maria Martinez, community liaison, wrote in an email. "We chose her as our keynote speaker for many reasons but primarily because she would not be a speaker who would participate in the event and leave our community. She is invested in so many ways and "her story" fits perfectly into the theme."
