St. Clair Shores Youth Diversity Council Celebrates "Our" Dream

Members of the St. Clair Shores Youth Diversity Council and the Michigan Roundtable for Diversity and Inclusion held the annual MLK Celebration Monday at South Lake High School.

The community gathered Monday at South Lake High School for the annual Martin Luther King Day Celebration.

The student-led program, with the theme "This is OUR Story,"included a student-produced video, keynote speech, awards and performance of "Lift Every Voice and Sing" by the St. Clair Shores Youth Diversity Council.

"These are the future leaders of St. Clair Shores," said Maria Martinez, community liaison, who was proud of the students who organized the entire program.

The event also included the presentation of a community quilt, was the idea of South Lake Principal Carmen Kennedy, who is also the event's keynote speaker.

"It is flattering when student ask you to do something," said Kennedy, who was honored to be asked to speak by the student leaders. "We are still honoring the legacy of Dr. King, but it is up to us to listen to the children."
