Shores Firefighters Join Community in Fundraiser for Fallen Westland Firefighter

St. Clair Shores firefighters joined WCSX, Roy O'Brien Ford and Wally's Frozen Custard Monday to raise funds for Brian Woehlke, a 29-year-old Dearborn resident, who died while fighting a strip mall fire.

Members of St. Clair Shores Fire Fighters Union Local 1744 took to the streets Monday evening to help raise funds for a fellow firefighter who died while battling a fire at a strip mall in Westland.

Off-duty firefighters held their boots high in the intersection of 9 Mile and Mack to collect donations for the Brian Woehlke Fund, which was set up after the 29-year-old Wayne-Westland firefighter died from injuries sustained while fighting the fire on May 8.

The fundraiser was organized by radio station WCSX-FM, which had four donation locations set up Monday around Metro Detroit including Roy O'Brien Ford in St. Clair Shores.

Additionally, Wally's Frozen Custard provided cones to those who made donations from the mobile catering fire truck.

Woehlke was a new addition to the Westland Fire Department, with about 10 months on the job when he died. He leaves behind his wife, Jennifer, and 13-month-old daughter, Ava.
