Happening This Weekend: Jazz, Cruise, Luau Fun and More

Whether you want jazz classics or classic cars, we've got suggestions.


Where/When: , 6-8 p.m. Aug. 25.
Why Go: The public is invited to The Lake House for a summer potluck, where guests can learn about how it helps those touched by cancer and meet like-minded individuals and Lake House staffers and volunteers.
Pricing: Free, but RSVP at 586-777-7761 or lakehouse.laura@gmail.com and bring a dish to share that serves 10-12 or please consider feeding Lake House's piggy bank to help it provide free support and programming.


Where/When: Edsel & Eleanor Ford House, grounds open at 6 p.m., concert starts at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 26.
Why Go: The Edsel & Eleanor Ford House and Detroit Jazz Festival have partnered for something new and exciting: Jazz at Ford House: A Prelude to the Detroit Jazz Festival. The concert features the Johnny Trudell Orchestra performing out in the open on the beautiful Ford House grounds.
Pricing: $25 for preferred seating

Where/When: Harper Woods High School, 20225 Beaconsfield; Aug. 27.
Why Go: This "A Stride 4 A Healthier Me" is a migraine and stroke awareness challenge. Participants will walk one mile starting at 8 a.m. or do a timed 5K run/walk at 8:30 a.m., navigating a course through the Harper Woods community. Pick up packet or sign-up starts at 7 a.m.

Where/When: Mariners Boat Club, 31970 N. River Road, Harrison Township; 5 p.m.-midnight, Aug. 27.
Why Go: Mariners Boat Club is saying Aloha to summer with a surf-rock bash and luau barbecue feast, hosted by On the Rocks Detroit and The Captain Jack Sparrow. Enjoy live music by The Orbitsuns, The Slot Rods, Frankie D'Angelo and Detroit Elvis. Plus Motorbilly Radio's DJ Del will spin the jams. An all-you-can-eat barbecue and luau feast will be served. And, competitive types can take part in the amateur hula dance and loudest Hawaiian shirt contests.
Pricing: $5 cover per person; all ages welcome. To dine at the buffet is $10.


Where/When: Metro Beach Metropark, 6:30-10 p.m. Aug. 28.
Why Go: Metro Beach has weekly Sunday summer concerts, and tonight is the last one for the season. Stop in and enjoy Dr. Pocket, who performs jazz, blues, rock and more. And if you're so inclined, arrive earlier in the day for the , for living history lessons about Michigan's colonial and fur trade era. They'll set up camp from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
Pricing: Free with park admission ($5 for a day pass).

Where/When: Along Harper Ave., from old Eight Mile to Bayside; 4-9 p.m. Aug. 31.
Why Go: While technically not the weekend, the last Wednesday in August means it's time for the annual Harper Cruise. Head up and down the strip, by car or by foot, and enjoy music, classic cars and an afternoon and evening of family fun.
Pricing: Free.


Where/When: At Wahby Park, in front of , 7-8 p.m. Aug. 31.
Why Go: Heather Gladden, a member of the Lake St. Clair Symphony Orchestra's wind section, will perform a selection of music with others in the park. The concert is free, so bring your lawn chairs and/or blankets and enjoy the show.
