Happening This Weekend: Fairy Tales, Sandcastles and More

There's fun to be had for the whole family this week, whether it's a concert in the park or a trip to the land of imagination.


Where/When: , 10 a.m.-8 p.m. July 11
Why Go: Browse the Bargain Book Sale, put on by the Friends of the Library, and pick up some great reads for a great deal.


Where/When: 2-3 p.m. July 12.
Why Go: School-age kids are invited to drop in for stories, each week with a different theme. Today, they'll be heading to Europe to meet with princesses and knights in shining armor.

Where/When: , 7 p.m. July 12.
Why Go: Enjoy a free concert by the lake, as the Lake St. Clair Symphony Orchestra, which is celebrating 50 years, performs to help kick off the Nautical Mile's Aquafest, which starts July 14. Attend and hear patriotic classics, a salute to veterans, picks from the "Sound of Music," "My Fair Lady," "Pirates of the Caribbean" and more.

Where/When: , 6 p.m. July 13.
Why Go: Enjoy a night in the park with fun for the whole family, including beloved children's characters strolling the grounds, a bounce house, face painting, a concert, plus a movie under the stars. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. and music is by Danny D & the Vagabonds, who'll be performing classic rock jams. The movie, Yogi Bear, begins at 9 p.m.

Why Go: It's time for the 6th Annual Car Cruise and Bike Night, running along the Nautical Mile. There will be music by Play It DJ, raffles and prizes to be won — not to mention cool cars on display.

FAIRY TALE FUN
Where/When: , daily starting July 16, except Mondays, through Sept. 18.
Why Go: Head over to the land of "Once upon a time" as Ford House unveils its latest exhibit, Fairy Tale Art: Illustrations from Children's Books, which features enchanting original art from several award-winning artists. Special activities are planned throughout the summer, but the real feather in this cap is the Fairy Tale Festival, which is July 23. Readers, stay tuned for next week's roundup for details.
Pricing: Viewing the exhibit is free with membership, otherwise a house tour is $12 for adults, $11 seniors, $8 children 6-12, and free for ages 5 and under. For grounds only, it's $5. Visit www.fordhouse.org for details.

Why Go: It's Children's Day at the Beach, part of Children's Appreciation Day at the Metroparks. Stop at Metro Beach for magic shows, nature crafts, building sandcastles on the beach, inflatable fun, Rosco the Clown making balloon animals, and more.
