Happening This Week: Legos, Fairy Treats and Fans

Creative fun for the week ahead, with a side of carbs.


Where/When: 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Aug. 9.
Why Go: The library is holding an all-day Lego Block Party, where kids of all ages are invited to drop in and get to building.
Pricing: Free.


Where/When: Metro Beach Metropark, 1 p.m. Aug. 10.
Why Go: Metro Beach has a bug hunt planned for grandparents and grandkids to enjoy. Search for ladybugs, dragonflies, bumblebees and more while you enjoy a walk and discover some interesting facts about the insect world.
Pricing: Free. Park entry is waived for the day, too.


Where/When: , 5-8 p.m. Aug. 11.
Why Go: The Bruce Post is holding an all-you-can-eat spaghetti dinner. Cost of dinner, $7, gets you spaghetti with meat sauce, garlic bread, salad, brownies and coffee.

Why Go: The Cultural Committee of St. Clair Shores will host its sixth Fine Arts Show on Aug. 11 on the grounds of the Jefferson Yacht Club. See and shop art, sculpture, photography and enjoy music and poetry, and much more.
Pricing: Free.


Where/When: , 6:30-8 p.m. Aug. 11.
Why Go: The Ford House is putting on a number of magical events as part of its fairy tale art exhibit. Tonight families can enjoy desserts in the Cotswold Cafe, and head to the Play House afterwards where a fairy will read a story to the youngsters. As a bonus, all children will receive a book to take home, courtesy of Friends of the Grosse Pointe Library. For ages 2-8.
Pricing: $15. Tickets must be reserved in advance.

Where/When: Detroit Institute of Arts, 5200 Woodward, Detroit; 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Aug. 12.
Why Go: Fridays are full of fun at the DIA, with plenty of activities in the works. From 11 a.m.-3 p.m. carve a wax crayon to make a Cylinder Seal. These were used by people of ancient Sumeria as a signature and seal of ownership. From 6-9 p.m. learn the art of making Uchiwa, Japanese paper fans. At 7 and 8:30 p.m. Paul King with Strings will perform a mish-mash of jazz and classical string music. And there will be drawing in the galleries from 6-9 p.m.
Pricing: Free for members, or $8 admission for adults, $6 for seniors, $4 youths 6-17.
