Happening This Week: Green Fair, GreekFest and More

Fun for the kids galore this week, from Assumption's GreekFest to the eco-friendly Green Fair, and then there's the Selfridge Air Show.

ARMADA FAIRWhere/When: The Armada Agricultural Society, 74280 Fair St., Armada; daily, Aug. 15-21.Why Go: Enjoy all the fun the Armada Fair has to offer, with animal judging and displays, a petting zoo, live music (Steel Magnolia performs 8 p.m. Friday), carnival, festival foods, beer tent, eating contests, monster trucks (7 p.m. Tuesday), demolition derby (7 p.m. Wednesday), chainsaw art, and much, much more. It's a whole week, after all. Visit St. Clair Shores Patch for daily highlights. Pricing: $7 adults; $2 kids 9-12; free for kids 8 and under; parking is $5 for the day or $25 for a weekly pass. PIZZA AND SALAD PROJECTWhere/When: Grosse Pointe War Memorial, 6-7:30 p.m. Aug. 18.Why Go: War Memorial is offering a fun class perfect for parent and child (ages 8 and up). Pam Gustairs will teach everyone how to make great pizza, including dough, sauce and toppings, plus make a salad and dressing. Bring your own beverages and aprons, please.Pricing: $43 per parent and child. Call 313-881-7511 to sign up. GREEKFESTWhere/When: Assumption Greek Orthodox Cultural Center; Aug. 18-21.Why Go: It's four days of summer fun at GreekFest. Enjoy the best of Greek culture, with food, art, Greek dancers and dance lessons, entertainment and more. Kids fun is planned all throughout the festival, with rides, games, activities, face painting, hair braiding, tattoos, a basketball shoot, an obstacle course, petting zoo and ponies are part of the fun. On Friday it's free family day, where the whole family is invited to attend for free between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.  Pricing: $2 for adults; kids under 12 get in free. GREEN FAIR IN THE PARKWhere/When: Veterans Memorial Park, 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Aug. 20. Why Go: The Green Fair features eco-friendly products, services, educational opportunities, displays, presentations, live music and children's activities. There will be musical entertainment, and Arts 'n' Scraps will be providing kid activities from noon-3 p.m.Pricing: Free. FILM ON THE HILLWhere/When: Balduck Park, Chandler Park Drive and Canyon Street, Detroit; 8:30 p.m. Aug. 20.Why Go: The Alger Theater hosts a free outdoor event, "Film on the Hill: A Moonlight Series," on Detroit's east side. The fun begins at 8:30 p.m. with live music, and the animated film, The Secret of Kells, will be shown at dusk. Free popcorn will be available and seating blankets will be available for a small donation.Pricing: Free. CATCH A FLICK AT THE PARKWhere/When: Stony Creek Metropark, dusk, Aug. 19 and 20.Why Go: Fancy a movie under the stars? This weekend the Detroit Institute of Arts' (DIA) Detroit Film Theatre (DFT) and Mi Community Media present Summer Cinema Evenings (SCE) in cooperation with Huron Clinton Metroparks. Two animated, family-friendly films will be shown, Eleanor's Secret on Friday, and Mia and the Migoo on Saturday. The winning entrants of the Romeo Student Film Festival 2011 will also be shown both nights. Moviegoers are invited to bring along blankets, chairs, food and beverages (no glass please). Concessions will also be available.Pricing: Free with park admission ($5 for a daily pass).. SELFRIDGE AIR SHOWWhere/When:Selfridge Air National Guard Base, near I-94 and Hall Road, Harrison Township; 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Aug. 20 and 21.Why Go: The Selfridge Air Show takes to the skies this weekend. Enjoy flying demonstrations by modern and historic military aircraft, military ground vehicles on display and more. One highlight is the B-1B Lancer which will be parked for public viewing and in flight that weekend. Flying begins late in the morning on both days, and approximately three dozen aircraft will be on ground display. Visitors will not be allowed entry after 2 p.m. either day.Pricing: Free admission and free parking. DISCOVER BUTTERFLIESWhere/When: Metro Beach Metropark, 1 p.m. Aug. 21.Why Go: Learn about the life cycle of the beautiful and delicate Monarch butterfly, from egg to caterpillar to chrysalis to butterfly. The interpreters at Metro Beach's Nature Center will give a lesson on these insects, and if there are adults at the center, they will be tagged and released for their journey to Mexico, where they winter. All ages are welcome.Pricing: $2 per person, plus park entry ($5 for a daily vehicle pass). Preregistration required. Call 586-463-4332.
