Happening This Week: Free and Mostly Frugal Family Fun

Looking for family and kid-friendly activities? Check out these suggestions.


Where/When: 2-8 p.m. Oct. 12 (for Friends members only; you can join at the sale); public hours are Oct. 13, 10 a.m.-8 p.m.; Oct. 14 and 15, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.  
Why Go: Shop for bargains at the Friends of the St. Clair Shores Library's fall book sale. Buy books, music, videos and DVDs for what practically amounts to pocket change. You'll pick up some great finds at great prices and help the Friends help the library. You're welcome to join as well, if you're not already a member.


Where/When: Chesterfield Crossing Cinemas, varying times on Oct. 14 and 15.
Why Go: MJR Cinemas (at Chesterfield Crossing and Partridge Creek) is holding its Children's Fall Film Fest every weekend in October, where kids can see the selected movie for free, and parents pay $1. (Please note: Tickets are first-come, first-serve.) This weekend's flick is Mr. Popper's Penguins, starring Jim Carrey and a bunch of tuxedoed feathered friends. Showtimes will be released Wednesday. 
Pricing: Free for kids, $1 for parents. 


Where/When: Metro Beach Metropark, 31300 Metro Parkway; 7 p.m. Oct. 14.
Why Go: Metro Beach Metropark Nature Center is hosting an American Girl Campfire Program. Ages 7 and older are invited to sign up for an evening of snacks and stories around the campfire. A hike, stargazing and a craft are all part of the fun as well. Be sure to bring your American Girl doll along.

Where/When: , 7-9 p.m. Oct. 15.
Why Go: The Lake St. Clair Symphony Orchestra celebrates its golden anniversary this season; as a result its fall concert is themed "A Time to Remember." Guests will be treated to the works of Rossini, Mascagni, Ravel and Mozart Strauss Jr., followed by a surprise encore. Afterwards an afterglow will be held with cider and donuts, plus a chance to meet the musicians.
Pricing: $15 for adults, $10 for seniors, and $5 for students K-12.  


Where/When: Anton Art Center, 125 Macomb Place, Mount Clemens; 1-4 p.m. Oct. 16.
Why Go: Free Family Fun returns to Anton Art Center. Families are invited to drop in and take part in two craft projects, with the themes being Ghostly Graveyards and Mask-Making. 
Pricing: Events are free, but the center will accept donations in support of its programming.
