Happening This Week: For the Kids

Festival fun, pancakes and cool cars, bargain flicks, nature and history await youngsters this week.


Where/When: , 3 p.m.-midnight Oct. 7 and 11 a.m.-midnight Oct. 8.
Why Go: Celebrate Oktoberfest with fun for the whole family. There are games, a bounce house, prizes, great local foods, live music, a bake sale, and more -- including a beer tent and Vegas area for the grownups.
Pricing: No admission charge.


Where/When: , 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Oct. 8 and 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Oct. 9.
Why Go: The grounds of Wolcott Mill Historic Center will come alive with history as it becomes the site of Civil War reenactments this weekend. Military drills will be performed, skirmishes will be acted out, crafts will be made, chores performed, wares will be sold, and plenty more. Kids will have a chance to join a military drill, make a craft or attend an 1860s-style school lesson.
Plus, at 2 p.m. both days, part of the Battle of Bull Run will be re-enacted, and for spirited fun, you can sign up for the Candlelight Tour, 7 p.m. Oct. 8, where a spirit will guide guests through the war's spooky past. 
Pricing: $3 for adults, for the Skirmish, or $1 for children. For the candlelight tour, cost is $6 for adults, $3 for kids 6-14 (anyone younger is discouraged from the tour). Call 800-477-3175 or 586-749-5997 to register or if you have questions.

Why Go: MJR/Partridge Creek Digital Cinema 14 has kicked off its Fall Children's Film Festival, held every Saturday and Sunday in October. Kids 12 and under can enjoy a free movie -- this week it's Judy Moody -- and parents pay $1. Showtimes will be released Wednesday.

Where/When: , breakfast, 9 a.m.-1 p.m., and car show, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
Why Go: VFW Bruce Post 1146 and Shorewood Kiwanis are hosting a pancake breakfast fundraiser and car show. Proceeds benefit World War II veterans. Fuel up with pancakes and then meander over to the car show to check out some cool wheels.
Pricing: Breakfast is $7 for adults, $3 for kids under age 7, and the car show is free. Unless you want to register your car, that's $10. 


Where/When: Metro Beach Metropark, 1 p.m. Oct. 9.
Why Go: Metro Beach's Family Nature Club will meet to discover how nature readies itself for winter. Learn why leaves turn red, orange and yellow; where robins and butterflies go when the mercury drops; and plenty more.
