DIA in the Shores: The "Captain" is at Brownie's

"Captain John Montresor" is part of the Detroit Institute of Arts Inside/Out program in the Shores.

Many captains can be found hanging out at Brownie's on the Lake, but through Detroit Institute of Arts Inside/Out program, Captain John Montresor by John Singleton Copley is literally hanging at the restaurant.

A digital reproduction of Captain John Montresor has been installed along the docks at Brownie's through the DIA's program which places art reproductions throughout Metro Detroit.

"This portrait presents Captain John Montresor, a British officer stationed in the American colonies. He holds a book that suggests he was a field engineer for the British army," states a plaque displayed next to the artwork. "A few years before this was painted, Montresor made the first detailed map of a tiny, but growing settlement-Detroit."
