Centenarian Celebrates Birthday on Veterans Day

Rufus Agnew celebrates his birthday with other veterans in St. Mary's Nursing and Rehab Center.

On the day Rufus Agnew was born in South Carolina, the world had yet to be at war, experience the Great Depression or experience any of the great technological advancements.

Agnew was born on Nov. 11, 1910, eight years before Armistice Day, which ended the World War I.

Every year after, Agnew has shared his birthday with Veterans Day.

This year, his birthday took precedent in the St. Mary's Nursing and Rehab Center as the facility celebrated his 100th birthday, in addition to Veterans Day.

"I am glad I can do what I have done," said a soft-spoken Agnew.

Dressed in a sharp black suit, white shirt and tie and black ball cap, Agnew was the center of attention at the celebration.

He received gifts, serenaded and was the first of 10 veterans at the center to receive proclamation from the city.

"Thank you for your valor and sacrifice," said Mayor Robert Hison. "You can never be honored enough."

Agnew was surrounded by three nieces, a nephew and his former caregiver at the celebration.

"We have been looking forward to this for the last couple of years," said nephew Fred Martin. "We have been impressed with St. Mary's for planning this party."

JoAnn Zangara, admissions and marketing manager for the center, said the event has provided the residents and staff with an opportunity to celebrate, but also share memories and experiences of their time in the military.

"You can read about it in books, but when you hear it from the residents, it is something special," said Zangara. "We must acknowledge the people who served in the military and thank our veterans."
