City officials have confirmed that crews have started the renovation of the former Manzella's Fruit Market for an expanded Dollar General.

The building has been vacant since July 2011 when the fruit market closed. In early August, city officials announced Dollar General will move from the current location on Little Mack to the vacant Manzella's Fruit Market on Harper.

An opening date has not been set.

City leaders can capture another dollar store but they can't capture a huge theater group. They lost it because people around it bitched so much the theater group said bye to st Clair shores, well those people naught their houses in a commercial district, what did they expect to happen in an area like that they chose to buy in? Move out of the business district or shut your big mouths.

Well, now we have a dollar store across the street from a dollar store. We have become a community of dollar stores, gas stations and burger joints. Why not have tried to solicit Trader Joe's or Whole Foods or another produce market? Manzella's was an oasis at the north end of the Shores. I guess we'll just let Nino have a monopoly.
