Volunteers descended on the Lake St. Clair coastline Sunday morning for the 17th Annual Nautical Coast Cleanup and Lake St. Clair Celebration.

In the previous 16 years, the volunteers have collected more than 547 tons of debris from the Lake St. Clair shoreline.

"It's the kickoff for summer in St. Clair Shores," said Dave Rubello, a member of the St. Clair Shores Waterfront Environmental Committee.

Joe St. John, chairperson of the St. Clair Shores Waterfront Environmental Committee, stated the event started as way to clean the beaches before the swimming season, and has grown to bring the community together.
