Vacant Blockbuster, Manzella's to Get New Tenants

The former Blockbuster, and Manzella's Fruit Market, are among a handful of buildings which are in various stages of redevelopment in St. Clair Shores.

A number of redevelopment projects in vacant buildings are underway in St. Clair Shores.

These projects include a mix of renovations, relocations and new businesses throughout which have been announced by city officials and advertising on the buildings.

Among the developments in the city:

  • Red Olive, 23975 Harper. A Greek restaurant will be moving into the former Blockbuster.  No opening date has been announced for the family restaurant which has nine locations in Metro Detroit including Plymouth, Rochester and Dearborn and Clawson.
  • Sunoco, 23300 Harper. The gas station has new owners which remodeled the facility and recently reopened.
  • Massage Green Spa, 21920 Greater Mack Ave. A local franchise of the national, environmentally-friendly spa will replace the former Happy's Pizza location. The building is currently being renovated. According to the chain's website, the spa is scheduled to open in October.
  • Independent pharmacy, 25014 Little Mack Ave. An independent pharmacy is renovating the former Coffee Hut restaurant. No opening date has been announced.
  • Dollar General, 31016 Harper Avenue. City officials announced Dollar General will move from the current location on Little Mack to the vacant Manzella's Fruit Market on Harper.

Glad to hear we are filling vacant buildings, but a Dollar General? No offense, but do we really need another one of those? I was hoping for something more useful.

I was really hoping for a Trader Joes or something like that in the Manzella building.

There is only one dollar general store in st clair shores. It is not a dollar store it sells alot of great items at discount. We go there all the time and looking forward to a larger facility...this is all great news!

Tj' s or a Whole Foods store would be great. I also support small businesses....deli' s or coffee houses....places people can gather at...I think St Clair Shores needs to look at cities like Rochester and work on a quaint downtown area of shops on harper ave. Promote people coming out...walking down for dinners...etc....lets see some real change and create a jewel!

I agree with you St Clair Shores would be a great place to do a lot of walking shops and dinner. Places where you could sit out side people watch and just relax. Like Rochester and Grosse Pointes, these places are packed all the time. But the problem with that is that SCS only worries about the Nautical Mile section. As long as that is kept up they dont care about the parts of town.

Trader Joe's has a location in GP. Anything outside that area in particular does not fit their demographic - I was told that by a friend who worked there. Besides, they have no great urgency to do battle with Nino Salvaggio's.

Maybe Ninos should take the old Kmart Building on 13 Mile it would have better parking andthey could add alot more items in the store.

What is going on with the Bigby's that was supposed to be building at 11 Mile and Harper?

But if Ninos moved to the K-Mart building - they would no longer be in SCS. Isn't that property in Roseville?
