St. Clair Shores Servicemen Honored on Heart of America Memorial

Three men with ties to St. Clair Shores, and died while serving in the armed forces during the war on terror, were honored Sunday at the dedication of the Heart of America Memorial.

Three men who lived in, and have family in, St. Clair Shores and gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country during the global war on terror were honored Sunday during the dedication of "" memorial in Mount Clemens.

The 9-foot solid granite, 7,000-pound sculpture was unveiled in front of the Macomb County Administration Building on Cass Avenue in Mount Clemens.

The memorial has the names of 15 Macomb County servicemen killed in action in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere since war on terror began in 2001 includes those with ties to St. Clair Shores:

Through the generosity of local businesses, the Lac Ste. Claire Kiwanis and State Rep. Anthony Forlini, R-Harrison Township, Munn's wife and daughter were able to attend the ceremony.

Forlini said that initially Jennifer Munn, and her daughter Jordan Lynn, were unable to travel from California for the ceremony. He worked with Delta Airlines and they were able to provide two tickets to allow the Munns to be at the dedication.

"This little girl lost her dad when she was one," Forlini said. "Now she came back to Michigan and saw that her dad was someone special."

Bryan Mazey, past president of the Lac Ste. Claire Kiwanis, said local businesses also contributed to the family including:

  • Dinners from Rose's Family Diner
  • Gift cards from Del Taco
  • Meals from Denny's and International House of Pancakes
  • Desserts from Cathy's Homemade Goodies
  • Tokens for Chuck E. Cheese's

"This way they didn't ahve to cook at all," Mazey said.
