A 22-year-year-old man, who just recently moved to Eastpointe from Florida, was arraigned Wednesday on armed robbery and felony firearm charges for allegedly trying to rob employees of a carpet cleaning company at gunpoint.

Christopher DeJesus, who was wearing a white coverall, was arraigned before 40th District Court Judge Joseph Oster for allegedly trying to rob the employees —an off-duty police officer and his nephew—early Tuesday morning.

He is alleged to have driven a white BMW into an alley behind 27229 Harper just after midnight and attempted to rob them with a shotgun. 

The victims ran from the scene, and DeJesus also fled. A short time later, officers were able to arrest DeJesus and found the gun he allegedly used in a gutter of a home not far from scene of the alleged crime.

He said little during his arraignment, but did state he recently moved from Florida and is living with his father in Eastpointe.

He did tell Oster that he is suffering from depression and is bi-polar.

"I have mental health issues (that) need to get addressed," he said. "I have a hard time controlling my thoughts. I would like to receive help from a facility if that is possible."

DeJesus was charged with two counts of armed robbery, and one count of felony firearm. If convicted, he could face life in prison.

He did waive his right to have a preliminary exam within 14 days to be evaluated by the Center for Forensic Psychiatry in Ann Arbor. 

Oster also set bond for DeJesus at $200,000.

"I do have some serious concerns about your ties to the community," Oster said. "These are very serious allegations."
