St. Clair Shores to Promote Officers

The St. Clair Shores Police Department will hold one of the largest promotion ceremonies in the history of the department Thursday when eight officers are promoted to command positions.

The St. Clair Shores Police Department will promote eight officers Thursday to command positions.

The ceremony in City Hall will be the largest in the history of the department, according to Mary Jane D'Herde, communications director for St. Clair Shores.

Promotions include:

  • Sgt. Todd Woodcox will be promoted to lieutenant.
  • Gary Titus, Joseph Heythaler, Gary Crandall, Mike Notoriano, Jay Cohoe, Dave Burmeister and Jason Brown to sergeant.

These promotions follow the departure of officers through traditional retirement those who took advantage of an early retirement program.

Deputy Chief Glenn Bowlin said this is the largest change in personnel since the mid-1980s, and brings a new group of command officers who are technologically savvy and bring in fresh ideas to their positions.

"It is a new day," he said.

The most recent retirements include traffic Lt. Tom Willette and officer Nora Smith, who was the second female police officer hired by St. Clair Shores.

Smith retired Thursday, 25 years after her first day on the job.

"I wanted to leave on my day," Smith said.
