2010 Census: Shores Population Drops, Becomes More Diverse

St. Clair Shores saw just over a 5 percent population drop according to the 2010 census.

The U.S. Census Bureau released Tuesday the results of 2010 census for St. Clair Shores.

Here is a snapshot of the findings:

Population: St. Clair Shores population is down. The most recent census showed a 5.4 percent drop in population to 59,715 residents in the Shores. In 2000 the Shores had a population of 63,096.

Race: The city is becoming more diverse. St. Clair Shores now has an African-American population of 2,350, up from 435 in 2000. The Hispanic population also grew from 745 in 2000 to 1,040 in 2010.

Macomb County as a whole also gained residents from 788,149 in 2000 to 840,978 in 2010. According to the latest figures from the U.S. Census Bureau, Macomb County is larger than the city of Detroit. The state's largest city lost 25 percent of its population during the last decade and now has a population of 713,777, according to census figures.
