Shores Police Welcome New K9 Officer

St. Clair Shores newest officer, Chase, began training this week and will hit the streets after being certified.

St. Clair Shores newest officer is going through intense training in preparation for hitting the streets with his partner.

Chase, an 18-month old Dutch Shepherd, joined the force this week and will take the place of Ivan, early this month.

Chase and his handler, six-year veteran Gerald Chomos, are in the midst of two months of daily training. The training then will gradually be reduced as the team hones their drug detection and tracking skills.

He will then have to be certified at the K9 Academy before he will be able to going on the road, according to Glenn Bowlin, St. Clair Shores deputy police chief.

Ivan is now retired and living with his handler, officer Matthew Steppey.
