Update: Police Identify Victim in Fatal Accident
A 26-year-old man from Standish was killed Saturday after he was hit by a vehicle on eastbound I-94. Police have closed eastbound I-94 at 11 Mile. The freeway has since reopened.
Police closed eastbound Interstate 94 at 11 Mile Road for nearly six hours Saturday after a 26-year-old road worker was struck and killed by a vehicle.
The worker, who was identified by the Michigan State Police as Justin Vallad in multiple media reports, was part of a survey crew from Surveying Solutions Inc., which was contracted by the Michigan Department of Transportation.
About 8:07 a.m. the worker was struck by a vehicle in a work zone between Frazho and 12 Mile, according to MDOT spokesman Rob Morosi.
"There was proper notification that the right lane was closed ahead," Morosi added.
St. Clair Shores Police Sgt. Jay Cohoe said at least two vehicles were involved in the accident, including one semi truck. One person had to be extracted from one of the vehicles and was transported to McLaren Macomb Hospital in Mount Clemens. Their condition was not known.
The Michigan State Police are investigating the accident.
In addition to the closure of I-94, the eastbound I-696 ramp to eastbound I-94 is also closed.
Patch is following the story, and will update as more information becomes available.
