Sailors Raise Funds for Leukemia Research
Sailors took to Lake St. Clair to compete in a regatta and raise funds for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
The Great Lakes Yacht Club recently hosted the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Leukemia Cup Regatta to raise money to support blood cancer research and patient services.
Participants have raised $500,000 during the 13 years the club has hosted the event. Great Lakes Yacht Club also has been the reigning winner of the Debbie Sobel Memorial Leukemia Cup, which is awarded to the club in Michigan which raises the most funds based on number of donations raised.
The top fundraiser this year was Trey Rose, who is a member of the Crescent Sail Yacht Club. This was his first time participating in the Leukemia Cup Regatta and has raised $6,090. He was racing in memory of his co-worker, John Balconi, who recently lost his life to blood cancer.
Charlie Horner was the second top fundraiser, and has been participating in the Leukemia Cup Regatta for the past 13 years with the Great Lakes Yacht Club. He raised $4,287 in 2012.
