Red Wings Return to Civic Arena for Charity Game

The Detroit Red Wings Alumni Association team beat Team GTJ in a charity game last year, and winged wheelers alums return Feb. 18 for a rematch.

St. Clair Shores is making a run for the name "Hockey Town" with another high-profile game scheduled for the city.

The city has hosted teams from across the United States and Canada for the tournament. Businesses and city officials are planning the for February.

And now the Detroit Red Wings Alumni Association will return to for a charity rematch game Feb. 18 against Team GTJ, a Senior "A" Adult Amateur Hockey team sponsored by GTJ Consulting, LLC.

"Last year they beat us 9-5, but we are planning on giving them a run for their money this year," said Kyle Johnson, GTJ Foundation Vice President, in a release.

Proceeds from the game will benefit the St. Clair Shores Hockey Association and the regular charitable activities of the GTJ Foundation.

"My brothers and I grew up playing hockey in SCS and we are thrilled to be able to give something back and support the great work the SCSHA does with the kids in our community," added Brandon T. Johnson, President of GTJ and the GTJ Foundation.

Last year the game raised fund to help cure Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP).

PSP is a fatal disease of the brain with no known cause, treatment or cure. It affects nerve cells that control many body functions such as walking, speaking, seeing, swallowing and even basic mobility.

Funds raised during the 2011 game, which included former Red Wing stars Shawn Burr and Jimmy Carson, were donated to The David Livernois Fund.

This year there will also be a 50/50 raffle and a silent auction featuring sports memorabilia and other prizes during the game.
