The long road to recovery for Kevin Bruisnma has brought him home to recover from the serious injuries he suffered after the motorcycle he and his wife were riding was struck by an alleged drunken driver.
Bruisnma suffered a number of injuries in the Aug. 22 accident, including a broken right wrist and foot, and his left femur was crushed in four places. He has spent nearly three weeks in the hospital, and in a post on the Patch Facebook page, he updated his status to readers.
"I wanted to thank everybody for the thoughts and prayers," Bruisnma, 36, of St. Clair Shores, wrote Wednesday. "I returned home from the hospital yesterday, and my wife should be coming home tomorrow. Please continue your prayers, as we have a long road of recovery ahead of us. God bless."
Bruisnma, and his wife Heather, were driving southbound on a 1983 Honda Nighthawk motorcycle on Harper when a Grand Am drove through the turn lane near Alexander Street and into couple.
The couple, who were wearing helmets, were thrown from the motorcycle and suffered a number of injuries. His wife suffered torn ligaments in her knee and three cracked ribs.
The car was driven by Sandra Jo Stafford, 54, of St. Clair Shores, whom St. Clair Shores police report was driving drunk. She was charged with two counts of operating while intoxicated causing a serious injury and operating while intoxicated second offense.
Stafford is being held in the Macomb County Jail on $20,000 bond and will return to 40th District Court on Sept. 21 for a pre-exam conference.
