Flash Mob Planned for JuneFest in St. Clair Shores

Casali School of Dance is organizing a flash mob to "Starships" by Nicky Minaj during Saturday's JuneFest. The business, art and entertainment celebration is hosted by the 9-Mack Merchants Association

Amateur and professional dancers will have a chance to strut their stuff - and maybe be part of a viral video - during a flash mob planned Saturday's JuneFest at 9 Mile and Mack in St. Clair Shores.

The annual event traditionally showcases businesses in the 9 Mack Merchants Association along with local artists. This year Anna Casali, owner of Casali School of Dance, is organizing a flash mob set to "Starships" by Nicky Minaj.

"It is a great way to kick off JuneFest and should get people excited," Casali said. "We were trying to find a way to bring together more of the community and broaden who comes to JuneFest."

Casali said participants should be ready to perform at 11:30 a.m. Saturday in front of Circare on Mack. She also set up a Facebook group, JuneFest 2012 Flashmob, and a YouTube video as a tutorial for dance.

Other events planned for the JuneFest from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. include:

  • Kids on Wheels Parade, gather at 10 a.m. at Caffe Far Bella with the parade featuring strollers, bicycles and wagons starting at 10:30 a.m.,
  • Chainsaw wood carver Jim Barnes demonstrations at 10 a.m., noon, 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.,
  • Mil Hurley, of "A Southern Gardener," will be at Circare between 11 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
  • On-going dance performances,
  • Sidewalk sales and in-store promotions,
  • More than 50 arts and crafts demonstrations,
  • A made in Michigan food court featuring Morley's Candy Maker, Sander's, Achatz Pies, Faygo, maple syrup, Better Made and Greenhouse Growers.

I thought a "flash mob" was an unannounced and sudden event that came seemingly from nowhere, caught the citizens off guard, then dispersed quickly...no, it's not that I "thought" it, I know it to be fact. This is simply a dance routine put on by a dance school. Nice? Sure, but call it what it is.

There are hundreds of different types of flash mobs. But the planning of flash mobs are always announced. You have to get people all on the same page in order to do a flash mob so everyone is in sync

David, I said it was a nice event, I just believe in labeling things for what they are...a little truth in advertising I guess. Again, nice event and I hope all involved have a good time.
