Bites Nearby: Sy Thai Shores

This week's Bites takes us to Sy Thai Shores, a taste of Thailand just off 9 Mile in St. Clair Shores.

, 23519 Nine Mack Drive, St. Clair Shores (586) 776-8424

A few years ago, Thai restaurants were just starting to make their way into the American culinary vernacular. Dishes like Pad Thai and chicken satay were no longer exotic. Thai restaurants are fairly commonplace now, but not in St. Clair Shores.

Sy Thai Shores is the only Thai restaurant in St. Clair Shores. Given that distinction, it could be expected that Sy Thai could offer subpar food because they are the only game in town, but that is definitely not the case.

Their menu contains all of the dishes you would expect at a Thai restaurant. Fresh ingredients are used, and portion sizes are impressive.

A warm and inviting interior makes Sy Thai a perfect choice for a casual night out or a spicy change of pace for a date night. Traditional Thai artwork adorns the walls.

My first experience with fresh rolls was at Sy Thai and I have never looked back. An interesting combination of flavor and texture, fresh rolls are wrapped in gummy rice paper and filled rice noodles, chicken, carrots, cucumbers, and cilantro. Bright and crisp, there is no better way to start your Thai dining experience.

Many years ago, there was a Thai restaurant in Roseville called Thai House. My first experience with Thai food was there and the first Thai dish I ever ordered was gang keaw warn, Thai green curry. Sy Thai's version brings back fond memories of Thai House. Big chunks of eggplant, strips of fresh green and red peppers, plenty of perky sweet peas and spicy sweet green curry sauce marry perfectly.

For Thai beginners, Pad Thai is usually the first dish recommended to try. Rice noodles are mixed with bean sprouts, peanuts, chicken, and a mild sweet and sour sauce. Pad Thai is not my thing, but it is without a doubt the most popular dish on most Thai menus.

Don't forget to order some house-made coconut ice cream for dessert. Creamy with delicate sweetness, it is a friendly foil to spicy foods.

Bubble drinks are another interesting treat. With flavors like lychee and pineapple among others, these frozen drinks have tapioca pearls throughout adding texture, but little flavor.
