Bites Nearby: Charlie's Family Restaurant

St. Clair Shores' newest restaurant is a family style diner focused on made from scratch cuisine.

Sometimes there's no need to change what has worked forever. In most instances, family dining restaurants are not going to transform the culinary landscape.

Charlie's Family Restaurant is about as straight forward as you can get. Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days a week, the menu is typical diner/Coney Island fare.

Breakfast options are plentiful with omelettes, waffles, pancakes and even crepes gracing the menu. Charlie's Skillet has bacon, sausage, ham, onions, green pepper, mushrooms and tomatoes piled on potatoes covered in cheese and topped with three eggs. Not for tiny appetites but perfect for a hungry dude, at $7.59 it's a great deal for all of that food.

Not in the mood for breakfast? Charlie's has an expansive selection of coneys, burgers, sandwiches, Mexican, Greek, Italian and other dishes. The spicy burger is a 10 oz. patty smothered in pickled jalapenos and American cheese, finished with two crispy onion rings and served on a ciabatta roll. Sure, it's not the most daring burger in the world, but the salty heat of the jalapenos should wake up anyone's tastebuds.

As with any new restaurant, the interior is spotless, but not so clean that diners should feel uncomfortable. In fact, the friendly waitstaff makes sure you feel at home upon entering.

Charlie's is a welcome addition to St. Clair Shores. A place where families can go and even the most picky eater can find something to enjoy. Even though the menu has been done before, sometimes a change of scenery is all you need for something old to feel like something new.

Charlie's Family Restaurant is located at 22513 Harper. Phone:

When I found out the Owner of Charlie's Family Restaurant owns and drives a foreign car (Honda) I refuse to patronize this establishment. People can do what they want. I was pressured to retire early with a small pension from Chrysler and I personally refuse to spend my small pension money at any businesses or professional service that doesn't support buying products from the former Big 3 and where my income is generated from ! ! !

Give me a break. That's the only reason you won't go? Where is your television from? Your clothes? Most everything you own. Spare me the "Made in the USA" junk. I'll bet his Honda is more American made than some Chrysler prodcuts.

I ate their and was very disappointed with the Meatloaf dinner and the high price. It had no taste and was very bland. You got nothing but a choice of one item with your dinner, either a salad, soup or coleslaw where most restaurants will give you two items like soup and salad for those prices Charlies charges. I won't eat there again..

A friend ate there, and won't be going back. Breakfast for 4 was $40.00! Based on that I won't be going either. Can't afford Charlies "Family" Restaurant. When will someone realize that families want to eat in a sit down restaurant, but not at high prices like this. Based on what I have heard and see here, I dont think Charlies will be there long. Not once word gets out on the high prices. Other places in the Shores serve a great menu wiithout the high prices.

Can I have an example of a restaurant that has more economical prices that is actually quality food? Not Ram's Horn, Not Denny's. Not Big Boys. The prices there are in line with most. Actually go in and try it instead of basing your opinion on someone else.

I ate there too and I thought the food was not good at all and over priced for what they served me. I will not be going back their either. Also, I had eaten at Charlies and asked for there take out menu. I called in the same order that I had at the restaurant from the take out menu and received something completely different. When I picked up the order and took it home I discovered this and then I called them and told them they just gave me the run around.

AJC
I have been to Charlie's at least five times. Breakfast, lunch and dinner. I found it to be very good, home cooking, at very reasonable prices. Each time I ate there it was with different people. All were very pleased. The people working there are very pleasent and helpfull. My son, had the breaded pork tenderloin the first three times he had dinner there.

@Max-check out Copper Penny, Grecian Table, or Athenian (all located between 9 and 10 mile on Harper) for home-cooked food at amazing prices. All of these restaurants all have great, friendly owners, too, and I like spending my money at their establishments. As for Charlies, I agree that it is a bit overpriced, and the food is not so exciting, but the atmosphere is very nice. One last thing-to the person who commented on the owner's Honda. Most Honda vehicles are made right here in the USA by American workers, and in fact are more American that some of the vehicles the "big three" puts out!

Agree about Copper Penny. Some of the stuff at Grecian and Athenian is really hit or miss.

I totally agree with Dave on the three restaurants mentioned. You get friendly service, great food and a lot of it for a very reasonable price compared to Charlies. My wife and myself did not like the food at Charlies and feel they are over priced for what they give you. Food had no taste to us and we never plan on going back again. They will close down like Izzy's did eventually. I retired from GM and I see some one remarked they would not go to Charlies since the owner drives a foreign car. I can tell you this, I belong to the GM National Retirees Association which is made up of over 6000 members of GM management retirees. I know from the quarterly meeting I attend in Michigan that the majority of those retirees "WILL NOT PATRONIZE ANY BUSINESSES THAT OWNS OR DRIVE A FOREIGN CAR".

Try Palmer's on Harper next to Village Market. The food isn't 5 star but it is dependable. My family of 5 can have breakfast for $28.

In regards to comments about Honda cars being more American than GM, Ford and Chrysler Products. Per the GM retiree web site Toyota sources 33% of there parts to suppliers in the U.S. while GM sources 69% of there parts to U.S. suppliers creating more U.S Jobs than the Japanese. Hyundai of Korea only sources 5% of there parts to U.S suppliers per the GM retiree web site. Also if you read the newspaper recently Japan had to shut down there assembly plants in the U.S since they could not get parts from Japan to assemble there vehicles due to the tsunami. I worked in cost in the Big 3 and the labor cost to assemble a vehicle is only 10 - 15% of the total cost of the vehicle or for an assembly worker in the U.S. all the rest of the money goes to Japan. Why do you think Japan is so rich since Americans keep buying there cars and Our U.S. government has to sell the Japanese U.S. treasury notes to keep America from going broke. $.43 cents of every dollar spent by the U.S is borrowed money from overseas per Fox news. Also of all the foreign cars sold in the U.S less than 50% are even made here per the Associated Press.News. Japan is laughing all the way to the bank and America is becoming a third world country.

So that's your reason not to frequent a local business? America is going broke for a whole lot more reasons that just that. I didn't hear all this ten years ago when the economy was good, a convenient scape goat now. I never see a Honda broken down on the side of the road. By the way, what kind of TV do you own again? If you were so adamant, you would boycott that too.

And I could do the same for Chrysler, GM and Ford. They all have recalls. It is a silly mindset not to patronize a business based on what car someone drives. Antiquated thinking. There is no way of knowing what everyone drives so to make a blanket judgement is ridiculous. I can at least respect Dennis because he tried it before casting judgement. Still waiting on what kind of TV you own. Check the tags in your shirt too - I'm sure it says Vietnam or China. Should we all go shirtless too?

I give the man credit for investing in a business in the city, making a property look nice and giving it a go. It amazes me that some people in this city would rather have an empty vacant building dragging down property values even further and taking more money out of St. Clair Shores. People are so quick to be the judge.

False statements? You judge a man's business by the car that he drives! That's the point here. Its old-school thinking that is out the window these days. Would you not go there based on his ethnicity? His religion? Why would his freedom of choice in regards to a car matter. As I said, at least try it and then comment back. Still waiting on that TV question. Fact of the matter is, it's probably Japanese. You can't make that argument stick.

(FYI)
Here is a web site below done by an independment Institute in 2010 on the importance of buying American Cars from American Companies like GM and how much more the American Car company contributes to the U.S. economy for U.S. jobs and U.S. income than the foriegn car industry does........Judge for yourself........

Thanks Dennis, but that was not my original point. My point was that it's ridiculous to boycott someone based on one aspect of that person (in this case his car). Especially since Tommy never even frequented the establishment.

Come on guys. This is not the place for you to be arguing about the American Economy or foreign vs domestic. This is a site about St. Clair Shores. I for one see and hear enough negativity. Let's try to keep this site for what it was meant to be :)

Agreed Loret. That's why I take umbridge in Tommy's post. He took a post about a SCS business, someone trying to make a living in this town and turned it into a pro-GM, union issue. Not the place for that - especially since he NEVER ATE THERE. He says that he will not frequent "any businesses or professional service that doesn't support buying products from the former Big 3 and where my income is generated from ! ! !"

I'm sure that he has supported more than he knows. While I am sorry that he feels the way he did, to boycott the man's restaurant for that reason and encourage others to do so in kind is just silly.

You guys really need to give this a rest. People sign up for this post to find out what is going on in St. Clair Shores, not to see two men arguing incessantly about a topic that has nothing to do with this site. PLEASE stop the negativity and arguing. We've heard more than enough!

With all due respect Loret, with the exception of this thread, nearly all of my other posts and pictures have done nothing but promote this city, attractions and business. There is such a thing as freedom of speech in this country - please don't try to regulate me. And what makes you assume I am a man? Maxine? If you don't like it just skip it - don't try to tell others what to do or think.

With all due respect Maxine, I think most people signed up for this patch to follow what is going on in the city, and I think it would be best to keep it that way. No one is trying to REGULATE you. I just think there is a more appropriate place to carry on this type of a discussion, and this is not it. Enough said about it. Let's just continue to promote our lovely city and all that goes on here!

Ohhh! Thank you Joe for your kindness in the words used to describe our restaurant. I can only assure you that as owners and staff are and will continue performing to the best of our abilities in accommodating and welcoming the residents of the great city of Saint Clair Shores. I am sure everyone's taste will always be different on food or "cars" :)... but I believe that we can all come together with positive criticism to improve as individuals and community.

Well, after reading all the coments posted, I think there must be 2 Charlie's on Harper in St. Clair Shores! I have been to the nice one several times. It is really nice inside, the staff has always been GREAT and the food has always been Great. You get a lot for your money, if you are a light eater or senior you can share with someone. I have not been for breakfast, but I have for lunch and dinner. I thought the meatloaf was great, and the left over fried up really nice. I guess if you feel the food it to bland try some hot sauce or go mexican. I think it is a great family place, prices might be a little higher than Palmers and maybe a few others, but I think the food is much better. Price wise and food quality and quanity is better than most places around. It is also nice to see a new business in our fine city thriving for a change. Kathy
