Air Quality Alert Issued for Detroit Area on Friday
The Michigan Dept. of Environmental Quality advises people and businesses to avoid activities like refueling vehicles and using gas-powered lawn equipment.
With temperatures expected to climb into the 80s, the Michigan Dept. of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) has issued air quality alert action day Friday, meaning elevated levels of pollutants are expected.
The alert has been issued for the Detroit area and cites "very strong solar radiation and light southerly winds" as conditions favorable for ozone development. People and businesses are encouraged to avoid "activities that lead to ozone formation".
These activities include:
- Refueling vehicles or topping off when refueling
- Using gasoline-powered lawn equipment
- Using charcoal lighting fluid
Everyone is encouraged to car pool, use their bicycles or walk, and delay or combine errands when possible.
"It is recommended that active children and adults and persons with respiratory diseases such as asthma limit prolonged outdoor exertion," the alert advises.
